The upgrade problem
Building CCTV rarely dies all at once. A camera drops off here, a hard drive there, the recorder’s software stops getting updates, and one day the FM discovers that half the “coverage” on the schematic hasn’t recorded in months. By then the system is too old to patch and too critical to simply switch off for a rebuild.
The answer is a staged replacement run like any other works program in an occupied tower: zones sequenced so the old system covers each area until the new one is proven, riser work after hours with permits and inductions handled, tenants notified before ceilings open, and common areas clean each morning. No — that’s the point of staging it. The existing system keeps recording until each zone’s replacement is installed, tested and recording. Where old and new must briefly share a location, we sequence the swap within a single shift, usually after hours, so any window without a camera is minutes in one spot, not days across the building.
Often, partly. Sound structured cabling and usable pathways can carry the new IP system; older coax can sometimes be reused with converters as an interim step, though a fresh backbone is usually the better long-term answer. We test what is in the risers and quote both honestly — reuse where it is genuinely sound, replacement where it is not.
