Door hardware, readers, locks and cabling often outlive the controller behind them, and cardholder databases can usually be exported and migrated. We reuse what’s sound, so you pay for a new platform — not a whole new system.
Doors keep working through the changeover. We migrate controller by controller, door by door, so staff badge in as normal on Monday and the only thing that changed over the weekend is what’s running the system.
The quiet risk
A legacy access control system doesn’t warn you. It runs quietly for years after the manufacturer walks away — until a controller dies and there’s no replacement part, or the software won’t run on a new server, or the one technician who understood it retires. Then a routine failure becomes doors that don’t lock, an office you can’t secure, and an emergency migration done at emergency pace.
A planned migration is cheaper, calmer and done on your timetable. Common signs: the manufacturer has discontinued the platform, software updates stopped arriving, replacement controllers are only available second-hand, or your installer says parts are “getting hard to find”. If you’re not sure, send us the controller model or a photo of the panel and we’ll tell you where it sits.
Usually not. Door hardware, locks and much of the cabling are often reusable, and many readers can carry over or be swapped progressively. The controller and software are what age out first — that’s typically where the money goes.
In most cases the cardholder database can be exported and migrated, so nobody re-badges a thousand staff by hand. Whether existing cards carry over depends on the credential technology — older formats are often worth retiring at the same time for security reasons, and we’ll tell you which camp yours falls into.
No — that’s the point of staging it. We plan the cutover so doors stay operational throughout, with out-of-hours work where a door genuinely has to go offline. An access system migration shouldn’t announce itself to your staff.
