Design, not gadgets
The standard office WiFi story goes like this: the network started as one router in the comms cupboard, then someone added a repeater for the far corner, then a second router for the boardroom, each one a reasonable patch at the time. The result is a floor where devices cling to the wrong access point, hand over badly between them, and drop exactly when the client presentation starts.
The fix is boring and it works: survey the floor, design coverage for how the space is actually used, install business-grade access points in the positions the measurements call for, and separate guest from corporate traffic properly. We’ve been putting networks into Perth commercial tenancies for 21+ years — the offices with good WiFi aren’t the ones with the most equipment, they’re the ones where someone measured first.
The usual suspects: too few access points for the floor, placement that ignores what glass and solid walls do to signal, and rooms that fill with twenty devices in a space covered as an afterthought. A survey shows exactly which one it is — and the fix is often fewer, better-placed access points rather than simply more of them.
Because coverage is a design problem, not a power problem. Consumer routers are built for houses; an office floor — concrete, glass, dozens of devices, neighbouring networks on every side — needs multiple coordinated access points in surveyed positions. Turning up the volume on one box doesn’t change the shape of the floor.
Yes. A visitor on the same network as your corporate systems can potentially reach printers, file shares and anything else that’s poorly secured. VLAN separation puts guests on their own network with internet access and nothing else — standard practice in any commercial fit-out, and straightforward to retrofit.
Often. Many fixes come down to redesigning around existing cabling — repositioning or replacing access points, correcting configuration, adding a run or two where the survey demands it. Where more cabling genuinely is the answer, we quote it as part of the same job; we do the data cabling too.
